  5. congestive heart failure brought on by diabetes; in Seattle.
  6. First elected to Congress in 1936, he served six terms in the
  7. Senate. Fellow Democrat Walter Mondale once joked that as
  8. chairman of the Appropriations Committee, Magnuson divided
  9. federal funds fifty-fifty: half for his home state of
  10. Washington, half for the rest of the country.
